Dear colleagues and friends,

I’m writing this email because we’re making an effort to recruit students who may be interested in pursuing graduate studies in Spanish at University of California , Merced .

Since the university has been open only for 4 years, the program has just started and, for now, we don’t have either an M.A. (Master) or a Ph.D. (Doctorate) in Spanish but in Humanities and World Cultures, with an emphasis in Spanish. Therefore, potential students must be aware that their degree will say " Humanities and World Cultures " (with a concentration in Spanish).

Currently, we only have one graduate student in Spanish Literature, another one in Latin American Literature, and another one interested in coming next year. In order to offer graduate courses in Spanish, we must have at least five graduate students. Until then, we will have to teach the courses in English; allow students to take independent studies with Dr. Cristián Ricci (Peninsular Spanish Literature) or with Dr. Ignacio López Calvo (Latin American Literature and Culture); take courses in other fields (in English) related to ours or in other UC campuses; or receive graduate credit for undergraduate courses (with extra readings and longer papers).

Since we are only two professors in Spanish, there will be few Hispanic literature courses offered in the next few months: the one I’ll teach in the fall will probably have to be in English and Dr. Ricci will teach his next graduate course next year.

If you know of students who wouldn’t mind being here during this transition period, please tell them to contact me. We are trying to recruit graduate students as soon as possible and once we have the magic number of 5, we will be able to offer regular courses in Spanish.

Of course, the benefit of this situation would be a more person-to-person relationship with the professors and a more interdisciplinary education. Another of the advantages of studying at UC Merced is that TAs make the same amount of money as in other UC campus but the cost of leaving in Merced is much lower (you can rent a room for 500 dollars). The salary for GTAs is $16,390 a year (divided into 9 months, 1,700 p/month).

The only two mandatory courses are WCH (World Cultures) 201 y 202. The first one is an interdisciplinary course in which each lecture is given by a different professor of the program. The second one is a sort of independent study with the advisor in which the student prepares his reading list for the M.A. or Ph.D.

The deadline to apply to join UC Merced and to receive a TAship is January 15, 2009. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and they must have the GRE (foreigners must also pass the TOEFL). Once they are accepted into the university, we will try our best to give all the students a full Teaching Assistantship with student fees waved (it will be more difficult for out-of-state and foreign students, but their some waivers for some of them as well).

In sum, if you know of students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in "Humanities and World Cultures" (this will be the case until World Cultures or the resulting segments apply for and are recognized individually as Ph.D. programs, in the next two or three years) and wouldn’t mind having a degree that says Ph.D. in Humanities and World Cultures with a concentration in Spanish (individual studies), please tell them to email me. Also, please send it to any of your colleagues that may be interested in informing his or her students.

Thanks a lot in advance,
